The Recreation Ground was given to "the residents in the Townships of Shevington and of the Parish of St Anne's Church, Shevington" for "any purposes calculated to promote the spiritual moral intellectual or physical welfare and the reasonable recreation advantage or benefit" of the said residents.
Football may have been played on this ground in 1904 or even earlier. At one time there were tennis courts, and cricket has been played here.
In the past forty years it has been used for the village carnival, with stalls, floats, welly throwing competitions and tug o' war contests.

Shevington Strikers Football Club are the main users of the field. Records show that the club was playing there in 1904.The club achieved FA Charter Standard Award in 2009. There are thirteen teams, including teams for girls and women. Because of the popularity of the club, some games and practices have to take place on other grounds.
